The Automated Instrument
The instrument has the ability to collect and digitize the data
from a number of transducers simultaneously.
This ultrasonic signal information, when combined with the positional data recorded from the motions of the scanner, provides the inspector with three dimensional data which can be displayed in a number of ways, referred to as "A Scans", "B Scans" and "C Scans".

The instrument stores the location and the digitized A Scan signal for each data point.
The scan and index resolutions have to be carefully selected to ensure at least three data points are recorded per flaw. This ensures sufficient data is collected for detection of the minimum flaw size required.
