Acoustic Emission testing locates and monitors emission sources from high frequency sounds generated by sharp discontinuities under stress. One of the major advantages of AE is that a whole structure can be monitored from a few locations. The structure can be tested in use (without taking it out of service) and/or continuously monitored. There are many applications for AE in numerous industries, including refineries, chemical plants, pipelines, power generation, manufacturing and paper mills.
